Anthony Passeron has come up with an elegant way of refracting the HIV/AIDS crisis through the story of his own family. Sleeping Children, the title of which describes youngsters who have nodded off after taking heroin, alternates chapters. One centres on Passeron's grandparents, their butcher's shop in an unnamed village in rural France, and the circumstances that led to their son Désiré, Passeron's uncle, contracting HIV in the 1980s.

In June 2016, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada) released the Safe Prescribing of Drugs with Potential for Misuse/Diversion standard . The standard came 2 months after the province had declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency (since then, more than 16 000 people have died from overdoses in British Columbia, the vast majority of which have involved opioids). The 2016 standard was legally enforceable.

On March 21, 2025, Israel demolished the only cancer hospital in Gaza. Footage posted online showed the total destruction of the Turkish–Palestinian Friendship Hospital (TPFH) in what appeared to be a controlled explosion. The Israeli Defence Forces toldthat the TPFH was being used by Hamas operatives, but did not provide evidence to support this claim . The hospital ceased functioning in November, 2023.

On March 5, 2025, WHO issued a statement outlining the grave consequences of the US decision to drastically cut international funding for tuberculosis. WHO noted that countries with high burdens of tuberculosis disease have been forced to suspend essential services and put staff on leave. Drug supply chains and community engagement efforts have been badly affected. Serious disruptions to laboratory services are hampering diagnostic efforts and data and surveillance programmes are falling apart.

On March 10, 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA; Vienna, Austria) released a statement praising Rwanda's commitment to cancer control. The IAEA outlined the striking progress Rwanda has made over the past few years. In 2011, it became the first African nation to introduce the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. As of 2023, 90% of Rwandan girls had received the vaccine by the age of 15 years. The country's first radiotherapy centre was opened in 2019.

On Feb 11, 2025, the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines (known as the Global Platform) announced that it had started distributing drugs to the six countries participating in the pilot phase of the initiative. The platform is a partnership between WHO and St Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is providing technical support and US$200 million in funding.

On Feb 3, 2025, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued a statement calling on countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to prioritise access to essential cancer medicines. The statement noted that there are more than 4 million new cases of cancer every year in the Americas and over 1·4 million deaths. Patients do not always get the treatment they need, however. PAHO gave the example of childhood cancer.
