Friday in the Philadelphia region starts quiet, but storms arrive in the evening Friday will start cloudy and quiet with comfortable morning lows in the low-60s in the Philadelphia area. By afternoon, skies turn partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s. That sunshine will help to destabilize the atmosphere ahead of a disturbance that will cross the area during the evening and trigger storms, some of which may briefly turn severe.

It's been cool, and even downright chilly in spots so far this weekend, but we'll gradually see some improvements through Monday. Highs will approach 70 degrees Sunday, and the mid-70s for some on Monday. But what a difference a year makes! Once again, you will need the umbrella and coat with you on Friday in the Philadelphia region. Scattered showers are possible during the morning and evening commutes, but there is no flooding threat. Sunglasses will be optional with mostly cloudy skies. The highs will continue to run below average in the low to mid-60s. Our normal high on Friday is 76, and it goes without saying we will be nowhere near the record high of 96 set in 1941.

This year's holiday weekend is on the early side and falls on May 24, 25 and 26.

PM showers developing Thursday; widespread rounds of rain in Philadelphia area Friday Sunday is Mother's Day, one of the most cherished holidays of the year and a chance to show appreciation for the sacrifice, care, love, protection and guidance by mothers for their children. More than 150 countries celebrate Mother's Day, including the United States, where President Woodrow Wilson declared the first Mother's Day on May 9, 1914.
