The Knysna seahorse can once again be viewed at the SANParks office in Knysna in the Western Cape. The educational display tank was recently restocked to raise awareness about this unique species. SANParks says the display is part of its campaign to strengthen conservation education. The rare species is found in nature in only three estuaries in the world. They are the Swartvlei in Wilderness and the Knysna and Keurbooms estuaries in Plettenberg Bay – all located in the Garden Route region.

Political infighting due to coalitions, Eskom debt and financial irregularities at Western Cape municipalities are some of the issues under the spotlight at the South African Local Government Association’s (Salga) annual Provincial Members Assembly in Mossel Bay. Twenty-six of the 30 municipalities in the province have been represented. Salga President, Bheki Stofile, says most municipalities in the Western Cape have good financial audits and performance systems.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for damaging winds from Sunday until Monday along the Southern Cape coast region. Wind strengths are expected to reach speeds of 50 to 70km/h, while gusting 85 to 100 km/h between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay. Winds will be moderate by Monday afternoon. Waves between Hondeklip Bay and Plettenberg Bay are expected to reach heights of four to 5.5 metres in a southerly to south-westerly direction.

Colourful kites of all shapes and sizes took to the sky at Sedgefield, near Knysna in the Western Cape, for the annual Garden Route Kite Festival. The festival was established in 2015, and has continued to grow in support and success, year upon year. The event even attracts international support. Karl and Sara Longbottom from the UK says it is the third Garden Route Kite festival they are participating in.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has confirmed that a body recovered on Saturday offshore of Wilderness Beach near George is that of a 20-year-old man who went missing while swimming at Victoria Bay on the 31st of August. Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says a group of paddlers paddling from Victoria Bay to Sedgefield came across the body floating in the sea. The body of the 17-year-old boy who also went missing on the day was recovered last Tuesday at Victoria Bay.
