A Cape cobra was safely rescued from the swimming pool of an elderly couple living in Island View earlier today. According to Mossel Bay Advertiser, Slangboere’s Devon de Villiers, who catches snakes across the greater Mossel Bay area, says he received a call from the couple at 12:30. He adds they only reported a snake in their swimming pool but did not know what kind it was. “They sent me photos of it and I immediately recognised it as a Cape cobra.

The son of murder victim Jonathan Malgas and a co-accused remain in police custody until their next appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on April 11. Mossel Bay Advertiser reports that Malgas’ son, 20-year-old Curtis de Bruin, and 18-year-old Kean October are accused of allegedly stabbing Malgas in Johnson Street, Asla Park, in Mossel Bay on Wednesday, January 22. Malgas was declared dead at the scene. De Bruin and October were arrested shortly after the incident and charged with murder.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Heiderand, Mossel Bay, today, following a student protest over claims of decreased accommodation funding by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). According to Mossel Bay Advertiser, about 50 students gathered outside the entrance of South Cape College in Kreupelhout Street, alleging that their NSFAS accommodation allowance would decrease from R42 640 per annum to about R25 000 per annum.

Photographer and videographer Christiaan Stopforth had an extraordinary encounter with an elusive and scarcely-seen blanket octopus in the Mossel Bay harbour. According to information published on the Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s website, blanket octopuses spend their lives, three to five years, floating in the open ocean. When they feel threatened, they swoop down into deeper waters with their capes flowing behind them.

Mossel Bay reptile rescuers, Slangboere, on Wednesday executed a dramatic yet comical rescue of a leguaan, also called a water monitor, that had been holed up in a shed on a property in Tergniet. Equipped with a blanket and sheer dedication, Devon de Villiers and two others entered a dark and cluttered shed on a property in Tergniet, searching within and underneath the structure before eventually spotting the tail of the leguaan hiding under a crate.
