In a boon for unpaid carers, a council grant has given this valuable and caring subset of the community a chance to exercise and connect. An EACH community health service based in Ferntree Gully has been given a Knox Council community development grant this year and has been putting it to good use. The grant has funded a program that will support carers with free physical activities and social connections.

Police have charged a man following reports of two fires in Wantirna South bushland last night.Monday 14 April saw the CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria crew stamp out a grass and scrub fire allegedly started by a 32 year old man. With the fire danger period still in place for Knox, emergency services quickly responded to two grass fires in the area of Pumps Lane and Axford Road in Wantirna South.

Gone, but not forgotten, a backyard project that began in Upwey has now expanded to include three other states in its mission to honour and remember lives that have ended too soon. The Tree of Souls has continues to unite the parents and families of the bereavement community nationally, with people from Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia recently pledging to be part of the grief project. Organiser Rineke Leigh from Upwey said the growth is fantastic for the group.

A 39-year-old man has been arrested following a series of thefts in Ferntree Gully earlier this week. In the early hours of 8 April, Rowville police discovered a heavily damaged vehicle abandoned on the side of the road. The owner of the vehicle was not present at the scene. Later that same night, the vehicle was allegedly used in the theft of parts from a factory in Ferntree Gully.

After a lengthy discussion, the Yarra Ranges Council endorsed the establishment of a new Visitor Economy Partnership (VEP) at Tuesday’s, 8 April, council meeting. Not unanimous in its decision, councillors questioned the VEP to be known as Tourism East and the discussion lasted nearly an hour on the night.

A special day was celebrated in Kallista on Saturday 29 March 29th, as the town commemorated the centenary of its name change from South Sassafrass to Kallista – which means Most Beautiful. The event drew thousands of locals, descendants, volunteers, and visitors from across the region, all coming together to celebrate the town’s rich history.

Outside of Me has launched at Burrinja this week, with mother and son Leticia Hodson and Wade Keighley presenting their art to the world in a captivating display which opened Saturday 29 March. The unique exhibition has captured a feeling many parents may be familiar with – the moment you see your child standing in their universe, still with you but now an amazing human doing wonderful things on their own.

Drains, roads, infrastructure and more are proposed in the budget draft for the Yarra Ranges that was recently released, with a number of plans proposed for the Hills area. Submissions from the public are open to residents until 27 April, with a hearing of submissions to councillors scheduled for a special meeting on 6 May and the final budget will be considered in June.

Ahead of the upcoming election, Tecoma Uniting Church is hosting a Meet the Candidates event on Saturday 5 April from 3pm to 4.30pm. Voters in the Casey electorate are invited to a unique opportunity to engage directly with the candidates in line for their vote at a Q&A-style event. All four candidates will be present – Labor candidate Naomi Oakley, current Member for Casey Liberal Aaron Violi, Greens candidate Merran Blair and Independent candidate Claire Ferres Miles.
