The Collegian is the student newspaper and news website of San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif. The paper is published five to six times a semester. As a First Amendment newspaper we pride ourselves on a commitment to the students of Delta College while maintaining independence. We reinvigorate the credo that the newspaper speaks for the students, checks abuses of power and stands vigilant in the protection of democracy and free speech.

The La Raza Club hosted a mask-making workshop on Oct. 31 in partnership with the Dreamers’ Success Center. The workshop featured Jesus Barela as a guest artist. Barela is a professor at American River College and Sierra College. Barela is experienced with making calaveras of papier-mâché for Dia de Muertos, a skill he learned from the Posada family, descendants of José Guadalupe Posada who popularized the tradition of making paper calaveras for the holiday.

Zero Martin, a second year theatre major, performing a scene as Harry from the upcoming play Puffs at San Joaquin Delta College in the Tillie Lewis Theater in Stockton, Calif. on October 3, 2024 Delta Drama begins its two-week run of “Puffs” on Oct. 11 in the Tillie Lewis Theatre. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Oct 11-12, and Oct. 18-19. Sunday matinee shows run at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13 and Oct. 20. For more information about Delta College drama, click here.

On Sept. 9, James Earl Jones died at 93-years old leaving behind a legacy of work. Jones had worked in the theater, off and on Broadway and went on to be in movies that were No. 1r in the box office. He was also known for being an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner. He is responsible for iconic movie lines such as “No, I am your father” as Darth Vader from “Star Wars.”Even though he wasn’t in the movie physically, his voice was the staple for that line and is quoted till this day.

At the end of April, two Delta College organizations held their own graduation celebrations, recognizing graduating students and commending those who won awards and scholarships. PHOENIX PROJECTOn April 29 the Phoenix Project, a group for formerly incarcerated students, had a celebration of graduating students. The formal event included theme decorations and catered dinner.

On Feb. 14, California Community Colleges’ Chancellor Dr. Sonya Christian hosted a teleconference on topics currently impacting the system for the month of February. Christian addressed three central topics during the hour-long meeting: Black History Month, Career Education Month and system enrollment.
