But there is much to dig into, going back into the history of British conquest on the continent. I’m specifically thinking of that famous image of Zulu King Cetshwayo ka Mpande during his visit to London in 1882, where he adopted Western dress in the form of a double-breasted suit, but still kept his traditional headdress - isicoco. To me, it’s a marker of how black dandyism has evolved from necessity — as it has in other parts of the world.

They help humanize an often misunderstood culture, even if what we see is tightly regulated. When photographer Tariq Zaidi took his first trip to North Korea in 2017, he was one of just 5,000 non-Chinese tourists allowed to enter the country that year.

Throughout, Zaidi captures the omnipresence of the North Korean state. Order, discipline and juche — the state’s ideology of self-reliance — are emphasized in vibrant murals. The figures of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, the grandfather and father of the country’s supreme leader, Kim Jong-un, loom over classrooms, train cars and public squares, where the pavement is marked with foot placements to ensure perfect formation during processions.

''This is a work I shot in Central Park, New York, in November 2016, for the first time collaborating with Annie Leibovitz for the Moncler brand. It was arranged by Eli Klein Gallery, and we completed two works at the time: one was in the most historically significant bookstore next to Central Park, and the other was this piece, completed in Central Park.
