Thursday night, delegates of the Professional Staff Congress (PSC-CUNY), the union representing faculty, graduate assistants, and many staff titles at the City University of New York (CUNY), voted 73-70 in favor of a resolution for the union to divest from Israeli companies and government bonds, identify other potential investments for divestment, and recommend that the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) pension plan also divest its $100 million invested in Israeli companies and bonds.

I teach on Wednesday mornings and on November 6, I was met with students who were in a shocked silence. They were in the 6th grade when Trump won the last election and again, this racist, misogynist authoritarian would take the White House. Some of them cried, thinking of friends and family who might get deported. For many, it was grief, fear and disbelief. When they hear "mass deportations," it means their uncle, their mother, themselves. What to say to these 19 year olds?

The genocide in Palestine has taught many people that there is no lesser evil when it comes to U.S. imperialism. Over the past year, we have been watching a live-streamed genocide on our phones; it is perhaps the first live-streamed genocide in history. We have seen children's dead bodies, mothers screaming over lifeless babies, the rubble, the horror of the genocide in Gaza.

The specter of the encampments haunts our universities, with increased policing and new rules and regulations created by administrators. As the fall semester begins across the country, university administrations and the police are creating a climate of intimidation and repression. As Natasha Lennard puts it in The Intercept: "College Administrators Spent Summer Break Dreaming Up Ways to Squash Gaza Protests." This atmosphere of repression is actively being cheered by the capitalist class.
