Cars were able to drive over a mud-caked South Chipley Ford Road on Friday morning, but the damage from the previous day's flooding was still evident. Parts of broken trees had washed over the bridge that spans the South Yadkin River and were lodged in the guardrail. Debris from upstream had gathered in various places along what was normally the roughly 70-foot wide river.

As crews of engineers continue their efforts to inspect the safety and integrity of roads and bridges affected by the flooding and heavy rains that inundated Iredell County on Nov. 12, county officials are beginning to piece together estimates for how much it will cost to repair the damage done. In a report to the Iredell County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 17, Iredell County Director of Emergency Management Kent Greene spoke to the extent of the damages financially.

As Tropical Storm Zeta blazed through the Southeastern United States on Thursday morning, Iredell County was among the hardest-hit counties in North Carolina, with heavy rain and near-60 mph wind gusts battering the county. Tens of thousands of Iredell County were left in the dark on Thursday with officials from local electric companies saying that it could be a few days before some of those customers have power restored.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation continues to evaluate the damage done by last week's flooding while 16 roads in Iredell County remain closed due to the damage sustained. According to Marcus Thompson, a spokesperson for NCDOT, much of the damage assessment will not be done until later this week. “Maintenance engineers are still compiling preliminary estimates for all the storm damage,” Thompson said.

As the sun sank behind the trees, the luminaries that lined the sidewalks at Cornelius Road Park began to give off their orange glow. On those luminaries, loved ones had written out the names of those that they wanted to remember, those they lost or support in their fight against cancer. “It’s really special to have the community come out and gather around us,” Regina Smith, development director for the Dale Jr. Foundation, said.
