Being in my early twenties, something I’m still getting used to is the fact that I’m making my own money. This is not to be confused with the babysitting money I was making 10 years ago. Twice a month is the same routine: I get my paycheck and think, “Wooo! We goin’ out tonight!” but then I snap back to reality and think about what that money needs to be put towards. The smallest part of it going towards fun. It’s been tricky to really start learning the ins and outs of finances.

Just more than 112 years later and the world still is fascinated by the events that took place in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the fateful night of April 14, 1912. That fascination inspired The Titanic Exhibition, which travels around and is currently situated at Old Orchard Mall in Skokie. Visitors have the chance to walk through an exhibit telling the story of the Titanic — from conception to sailing to sinking to now — and its effect on the world.

Last weekend, my mom and I went up to Old Orchard Mall in Skokie to check out The Titanic Exhibition. During the entire tour, I kept flashing back to the 12-year-old version of myself and her obsession with the movie “Titanic.”While this exhibit was 94% based on the actual events (including posters of facts and anecdotes and enclosed displays of artifacts), some of the tour touched on the 1997 film starring Leo and Kate.

A sea of Virginia bluebells, Mertensia virginica, peppered the walking trail near Potawatomi Campground and were joined by other colorful plants such as Wild Blue phlox and wakerobins, or trillium recurvatum.

Local top story Red Hots for the Riverwalk Residents might begin to imagine a scenic stroll along the East Riverwalk with a red hot in hand. The Currents of Kankakee teamed up with Jaenicke’s Root Beer Stand on Monday to raise funds for the trees and plants that will help beautify the 1-acre first phase of the planned 4-mile Kankakee Riverwalk. The first phase is known as the East Riverwalk and is located at the southeast corner of East River Street and South Schuyler Avenue.

Next week, I’ll be heading out to fabulous Las Vegas for the fourth and final time in my 20s. It seems a fitting bookend that my first trip there was for my 21st birthday, and now this coming trip is just a few weeks shy of my turning 30. I’m not much for gambling, but one of my favorite pastimes is people watching, and Vegas is one of the best places to do that. This trip will be an exciting one, as it’s for the wedding of one of my best friends.

It feels like just yesterday I was going to my sister’s house to meet her newborn baby girl. We all blinked and suddenly that baby girl is 3. Though the years have been flying by, it’s been so special to pause and appreciate Alexis grow into who she is today. She’s gone from a calm baby to a toddler with a larger-than-life personality. She loves to laugh and sing. She is smart and inquisitive. She’s caring and kind.
