ALABASTER, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A child has died after being involved in a dog attack at a family member’s home in Alabama. According to the Shelby County Coroner’s Office, the 6-month-old baby was attacked by the family’s dog on March 14. She was taken to the UAB Hospital but she did not survive. According to her obituary,Ember Renee Southard, affectionately called ‘Noodle’, is being remembered for her smile, her laugh and the huge impact she made on family and friends during her short life.

IRONDALE, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - An Alabama police lieutenant known and respected by many in his community was hit and killed while directing traffic during a church event. Irondale Police say 60-year-old Lt. Mark Meadows was directing traffic Monday on Grants Mill Road during the “21 Days of Prayer” event at the Church of the Highlands. He was hit by a passing vehicle just before 7 a.m. and taken to the hospital, where he later died, WBRC reports.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - The man accused of shooting and killing four people and wounding 17 others outside an Alabama club in September has been indicted by a grand jury in another mass shooting in July and a homicide in August. Damien McDaniel was indicted on capital murder of two or more persons and four counts of capital murder committed by or through the use of a deadly weapon fired or otherwise used within or from a vehicle.

AUBURN, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A flight reportedly carrying the men’s basketball team of Auburn University was diverted Friday while on its way to Houston because of an altercation on the plane. The flight was diverted several minutes after taking off just before 3 p.m., according to FlightAware. WBRC reports it was able to listen to air traffic control for the area where a plane requested an emergency landing in Montgomery.

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A man is accused of trying to hire someone to murder his wife and children. Mohammad A.H. Mohammed, 63, is charged with the use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire. According to court records, Mohammed contacted someone, asking them repeatedly to find someone to “take care of” his wife and six adult children. The person informed law enforcement. An undercover FBI agent then posed as a hitman.

According to those scores, 91% of third graders are reading at or above grade level. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC) - New numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a concerning trend for overdoses in Alabama. While provisional data shows those numbers decreasing nationwide, they've increased in the state. "As a physician, this data is very concerning to me," says Dr. Karen Landers, the Chief Medical Officer for the Alabama Department of Public Health.
