    Born in England, Bridges was introduced to geology from an early age through his father, Dr RJ Bridges, a chief geologist for The Central Mining and Investment Corporation in South Africa. His childhood in South Africa and his father's work exposed Bridges to various gemstones, which he collected. Bridges was educated at Hilton College before completing his Bachelor of Science in geology at the University of Witwatersrand.

    Born in 1894 in England, his family immigrated to Australia when he was two years old. His father, Reverend Michael Smith, was stationed at various locations across the country, before settling at Double Bay. Hodge-Smith completed his education at Scot's College, the Sydney Technical High School, the Sydney Technical College and the University of Sydney. After school, he passed an exam to work in the Public Service and was offered a cadetship in the Geological Survey of New South Wales.

    The history of the Australian gold rush in the 1850s is well-known and appreciated. It all began in 1851 with the first gold discovery near Bathurst in NSW. This pivotal event set the stage for the Australian population to quadruple from 430,000 to 1.7 million by 1871. When they heard about the discovery of gold, people traversed the globe and took a considerable risk, travelling halfway around  the world in search of their fortune. The largest non-European group of miners were Chinese.

    Cody had an unrivalled passion for Australian opals and dedicated most of his life to promoting and celebrating this unique gemstone. His love for collecting gemstones and minerals started from an early age, and a school excursion to Coober Pedy accelerated his love for opals. In 1964, his interests turned to cutting opal, and he went on to complete studies in Valuations at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
