1 INTRODUCTION Romantic relationships have sizeable health effects. Strong, satisfying romantic relationships promote health, while troubled relationships worsen health (Kiecolt-Glaser & Newton, 2001; Robles et al., 2014). Partners' relational dynamics have been associated with self-rated physical and emotional health, cardiovascular function, stress hormones, inflammation, and wound healing (Kiecolt-Glaser, 2018; Kiecolt-Glaser & Wilson, 2017; Shrout, 2021).

Abstract The field of relationship science began with understanding the role of attraction and has expanded to examine factors associated with relationship initiation, development, and maintenance. Despite the growth of the field, recent reviews of topics present in relationship science have revealed a dearth of literature examining sociocultural contexts that may impact relational processing, especially for traditionally underrepresented groups in science.

CONCLUSION My goal in writing this paper is to demonstrate an engagement in reflexive practice and critical consciousness by identifying how the personal, professional, and political collide within my own scholarly development—in times past and present, with an eye toward the future. As Allen (2023) asked, I inquire of myself and my readers: what do you struggle with in your personal, professional, and political work?
