Four hundred airmen of the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing have returned to the Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia after completing five months of missions in support of science research in the Antarctic. The airmen used five ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules troop-cargo aircraft during 79 missions.

A corps of women volunteers is ready to add condolences and honor every veteran buried at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Those 16 women from Capital Region communities are Saratoga Ladies volunteers led by Theresa Boone of Clifton Park. They are on call for duty during military funerals at the cemetery.

Malta Veteran Appreciation Program volunteers are selling $100 bricks. Each brick purchase can commemorate a veteran, help build a veteran memorial park and help finance an emergency fund that provides food, clothes, furniture, household goods, handicap ramps, transportation, and homes for needy Malta area veterans, according to Renee Farley, Malta Veterans Appreciation Program president. “The Malta Veterans Appreciation Program provides charitable support services to veterans,” Farley said.

Air Force Col. John Martin of Malta has received a Legion of Merit Medal and a New York State Conspicuous Service Medal in recognition of his exemplary performance during his 30 years of military duty before retirement. Martin, New York National Guard inspector general, was honored during a ceremony at the New York National Guard Headquarters in Latham. His wife, Rebecca, also received a New York State Conspicuous Service Medal in recognition of her support of her husband’s military career.
