Years ago, the progressive rock group Kansas had a huge hit with an unlikely song, a spare and beautiful ballad that suggested “all we are is dust in the wind.” This little hymn of hopelessness reflects the way many of our contemporaries see themselves. It leads us to ask, Who are we and what kind of world do we live in? Is there any meaning to our existence? Many profess a philosophy of “nothing but.” Humans are nothing but the evolutionary product of molecules in motion.

Scripture commends a variety of attitudes and emotions in worship. Joy and love are prominent, of course, and we love to sing songs on those themes. Beyond that, in the Psalms, for example, we see saints trusting God through tears (e.g., Pss. 22; 42; 88). Job and the prophets likewise display sadness while falling on grace. And it’s certain that, on any given week, some in our churches are grieving. No wonder Scripture teaches it’s good to sing songs that voice both joy and sadness.

I love the writings of female missionaries such as Helen Roseveare and Florence Young. One of the reasons for my appreciation is their honesty. I tend to put missionaries on a pedestal, as if you need some special gift to be one. But hearing them in their own words, you recognize these missionaries are a lot like us. This makes sense as no matter who we are or where we live, we’re all called to be involved in the same mission.
