A Fresno man pleaded guilty to having child sexual abuse material, which he traded online with other adults, prosecutors said Wednesday. Monico Erich Gastelo, 43, sexually exploited children online as well as received and distributed the obscene material using Snapchat, Telegram and other apps, the U.S. Department of Justice said. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of children and one count of distribution and receipt of child pornography.

The number of people the Fresno County Sheriff's Office transferred to federal immigration officials continued to grow exponentially in 2024, according to figures provided Tuesday. The sheriff's office detained and transferred 102 people to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2024, more than double the 39 people it transferred in 2023. The total in 2024 was also more than five times as many undocumented immigrants who were transferred to ICE in 2022.

Two men from out of state were indicted Thursday for attempting to scam Fresno County out of $1.5 million in 2020 - a scheme similar to one that hit the city of Fresno the same year. Jafaar September Nyangoro, 52, of Franklin, Tennessee, and Peter Bah Acha, 45, of Berlin, Germany, were named in the six-count indictment that included conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud related to a scheme, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release.
