Erith has been selected as the demolition, piling and concrete contractor for a new £300M tower development at 99 City Road on Old Street Junction. Property developer Endurance Land, a member of the Nan Fung Group, is redeveloping and extending a 1990s office building into a 35-storey tower. It has appointed enabling specialist Erith to carry out early-stage works including structural demolition and piling, followed by the construction of a new basement box and a core for the tower.

Work to stabilise a cliff below The Leas in Folkestone is due to start in autumn this year, following two landslides along the cliff face in 2023 and 2024. The landslides struck the frontage of the Leas Cliff in Folkestone over the autumn and winter of 2023 and 2024, which saw some of the highest levels of rainfall on record. As a result, the cliffs – formed of poorly cemented Folkestone Formation sands – were particularly susceptible to slips.

A park in Wales has reopened after the Mining Remediation Authority completed work to stabilise the ground around an old mine shaft that collapsed more than two years ago. The ground collapse occurred at Solvay Banks Park in Southsea, Wrexham, in April 2023. Wrexham Council reported the collapse to the Mining Remediation Authority (MRA). Investigations by the authority showed that the shaft measured around 110m deep. It was also located nearby to two shafts of a similar depth.

Atkins Réalis engineering geophysics lead Jim Whiteley and a team of 16 co-authors have won the 2024 BGA Medal for their paper on “High-resolution geophysical monitoring of moisture accumulation preceding slope movement – a path to improved early warning”. The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) awards its medal annually to a paper written for “meritorious contributions to geotechnical science or practice”.
