Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with approximately 162 million people and expected to continue to grow to 239 million by 2025 and 440 million by 2050 due to population momentum [25]. In Nigeria, over one-third of pregnant women do not attend Antenatal Care (ANC) services during pregnancy [26]. Among women of childbearing age, 34.9% did not use ANC service, and one hundred forty-five Nigerian women die in childbirth every day [27].

This systematic review was performed following preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to search scientific literature (Supplementary 1). The methodology of this scoping review was developed based on the recommendation of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) statement [15, 16], and items in the PRISMA-ScR checklist are completed [16] (Additional file 1). The type of NTDs to be considered in this scoping review was informed by the revised national NTDs master plans of Ethiopia [5, 10].
