Take a rare photo journey through Chornobyl, Ukraine, at an exhibit May 7 to June 7 at the Viewpoint Photographic Arts Center in Sacramento. I was literally tied up in knots as I tried to figure out all those sailing knots and what went under, over, or through on my way to a neat bowline, reef, or square hitch. But, as we were told on our liveaboard week learning to sail with Nautilus Sailing, “If you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot.”And tie a lot we did. In fact, we tied so many knots during our week that it became second nature. Which is the goal of an immersive week of learning to sail.

In sailing, there are three rules, we were told somewhat tongue-in-cheek:Don’t hit stuff. Keep water out of the boat. Come back with the same number of people you left with. I guess we passed our week as students on a Nautilus Sailing learn-to-sail liveaboard course in Croatia since we avoided crashes, came back with the right number of people, and water didn’t get into the boat (except what dripped off our bodies after a swim in crystal clear water). The liveaboard learn-to-sail week was fun, too.

Driving into Birmingham from the east, the towering chimneys and rusty furnaces at Sloss Furnaces dominate the horizon. You may have come to this Alabama city to learn about the civil rights movement, but Birmingham’s industrial impact on the world is also huge. Now preserved as a national historic landmark, Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham was once the largest manufacturer of pig iron in the world and remains a monument to the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century.

No wonder, it has what is called the oldest Christmas Market in the world with the “Striezelmarket” dating back to the 1400s. If you want to enjoy the Christmas spirit in Europe, then Dresden should be at the top of your list. Doesn’t hurt that it’s not all that far from the famous markets of Prague, either.
