The Cork bus is on the road to Quilty. Hosting them is Clare. Both games have a 7pm start. Where Cork and Kerry are opening their respective accounts this evening, Clare and Tipperary are stepping inside the whitewash for the fourth occasion.

We’ve mentioned a couple of times in recent weeks the correlation between a county’s underage strength and the progress of their nurseries in the Harty Cup. The past two years has seen two first-time winners of the Munster post-primary competition. Both hailed from Premier Country. In 2023, you had Cashel Community School making history, followed by further history 12 months later from Nenagh CBS. The first of those wins, it should be added, came after an all-Tipp decider.

FOR the second January in succession, Kerry schools outnumber their Cork counterparts three-to-one in the Corn Uí Mhuirí semi-final line-up. For the second January in succession, and for the eighth season out of the last nine, Cork representation in the competition is likely to end at the semi-final juncture. Three Cork schools - Hamilton High School Bandon, Patrician Academy Mallow, and St Francis College Rochestown - were involved in this week’s quarter-finals.

Took an age to get going first day out against reigning champions Nenagh. Trailed by four as late as the 53rd minute. Half-back James O’Leary and sub Adam Lee secured them an injury-time share of spoils. Going into their second and final group outing against Rochestown, they knew they needed to better Nenagh’s 21-point dismissal of the Cork city school to head the group and put themselves in the frame for direct quarter-final passage.
