AbstractThe ocean annually absorbs about a quarter of all anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Global estimates of air–sea CO2 fluxes are typically based on bulk measurements of CO2 in air and seawater and neglect the effects of vertical temperature gradients near the ocean surface. Theoretical and laboratory observations indicate that these gradients alter air–sea CO2 fluxes, because the air–sea CO2 concentration difference is highly temperature sensitive.

AbstractBy conservative estimates, microbes make up about 17% of the world's biomass and are essential for most ecosystem functions. However, the mechanisms driving the variation in microbial species diversity in response to both natural and anthropogenic temperature gradients remain unclear. In this study, we integrate ecological metabolic theory with a community assembly model to predict that microbial community diversity generally follows a unimodal pattern with temperature.

AbstractWarming can have profound impacts on ecological communities. However, explorations of how differences in biogeography and productivity might reshape the effect of warming have been limited to theoretical or proxy-based approaches: for instance, studies of latitudinal temperature gradients are often conflated with other drivers (e.g., species richness). Here, we overcome these limitations by using local geothermal temperature gradients across multiple high-latitude stream ecosystems.
