Customer scam losses in FY24 are tracking around 30 per cent lower than the previous year in a positive sign that the steps the bank is taking to protect customers are paying off. Still, scammers are innovative and constantly thinking up new ways to catch people out, so it pays to remain vigilant. Westpac introduced the Verify feature in June, which alerts customers to a potential account name mismatch when they’re adding a new payee using a BSB and account number.

The latest survey included additional questions on which topics consumers recall hearing items about in the news, and whether that news was perceived as favourable or unfavourable. Two things stood out in June. The first was budget and tax news, which was viewed as less unfavourable than it was three months ago. That likely reflects cost of living supports that are starting to come through, as well as Stage 3 tax cuts which take effect on July 1.

In 2023, NPYWC received an overwhelming response when it piloted a Women’s Aussie Rules 9’s program for teenage girls. While the interest had always been there, aspiring players had been held back by a lack of equipment and facilities, nearby competition, and in some cases an inhibition to play the game they love.
