    Textbooks are an essential part of nearly every college student’s experience. Whether an online version, a tattered used book or a copy borrowed from fellow classmates, these reading materials serve as a base for many college courses. However, some classes impose a total textbook cost as high as $297.50, according to The Michigan Daily’s data team.

    Across schools and subjects at the University of Michigan, there is one element found on nearly all course syllabi: the textbook section. Sometimes these books are offered through online academic portals such as VitalSource, while other times students must search for and acquire the textbooks themselves. The Michigan Daily sat down with some U-M students to hear their opinions on textbook prices, thoughts on piracy and hopes for the future of textbooks.

    The University of Michigan Esports team held its semesterly Community Local Area Network event in the Central Campus Classroom Building last Sunday, where about 50 students gathered to talk and play video games together. Several student organizations, including Michigan Tetris, Michigan Chess Club and Alternate Reality Initiative, hosted dedicated spaces for students to play and learn more about their respective games.

    Pastel oranges and greens dot the walls of Madras Masala’s Packard Street building — a location celebrating its first anniversary in November. Madras planted its roots on Maynard Street for 20 years before a fire destroyed the old building in January 2023. That wasn’t enough to deter owner Gopalsamy Ramanujam, who opened the Packard Street location in November 2023. Since then, he has continued to deliver a harmonic blend of North and South Indian cuisine to the Ann Arbor community.

    The Political Speech and The Public Square speaker series event began its second session of the year on Tuesday, following the first session held on Sept. 10. Centered around the theme “What’s at Stake for Me in the 2024 Election?” the session offered the University of Michigan community an opportunity to listen to and learn from each other. To participate, students and faculty registered to give speeches at the event, sharing a variety of perspectives on reproductive rights.
