IntroductionChildhood and adolescent overweight and obesity is a major public health issue in Australia, affecting one in four young people aged 2–17 years in 2017–18.1 This is a concern, not only because of the immediate impacts on physical and psychological health2 but because excess weight tends to persist into adulthood3, increasing the risk of obesity-associated morbidity and premature mortality.

AbstractAustralia has a high level of cultural and linguistic diversity, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Children from specific cultural and ethnic groups may be at greater risk of overweight and obesity and may bear the additional risk of socioeconomic disadvantage. Our aim was to identify differences in body-mass index z-score (zBMI) by: (1) Cultural and ethnic groups and; (2) Socioeconomic position (SEP), during childhood and adolescence.
