The remains of a tree which proved to be older than Stonehenge have been discovered during the biggest peatland restoration project ever undertaken by the National Trust, at a nature reserve near Newmarket. The project at Wicken Fen, spanning 590 acres of lowland peat, marked a major step forward in tackling biodiversity loss and climate change. During the restoration works there was a significant archaeological discovery.

A Tiger Moth bi-plane from World War Two has returned to an airfield near Newmarket for the first time in nearly 80 years. It has been donated to Bottisham Airfield Museum by the Imperial War Museum, in Duxford, and – much to the delight of museum volunteers – went on display for the first time on Sunday.

Motorists and motorcyclists using Newmarket’s Mill Hill have been having their speeds monitored over the past week by Suffolk’s safety camera team. The organisation, which works with Suffolk Police confirmed a speed data recorder (SDR) has been deployed on the road where the limit is 30mph but where speeds are often much higher. A spokesman for Suffolk Police said: “It is a covert box which collects basic speed data only from every vehicle that passes it.

A major survey carried out with the children and young people of Newmarket has revealed their need for a youth hub in the High Street. The Newmarket Youth Insight Report is the result of a study commissioned by the Newmarket Charitable Foundation and carried out by Ipswich-based charity For Children and Young People (4YP) between June and October last year.

The inquest into the death of a mother-of-three who was beaten to death by her husband at their Newmarket home is likely to be held next spring after hearings into the actions of two police officers involved in the investigation have been concluded. Health care assistant Taiwo Abodunde died on November 28, 2023 and in May 2024 her husband 48-year-old Olobunmi Abodunde, admitted killing her and was jailed for life at Ipswich Crown Court.
