Under the city of Graham’s new garbage contract with KC Dumpsters, only one polycart will be provided unless requested Monday by a city customer. The city entered into a new contract with KC Dumpsters to provide garbage collection services starting Monday, Sept. 1. KC Dumpsters was one of four proposals submitted to the city, including the former provider Waste Connections. New polycarts by KC Dumpsters will be delivered to existing customers during the week of Monday, Aug. 18 through Sunday, Aug. 31.

As the anniversary of America’s independence nears, the city of Graham, for a second year, is gearing up to host a celebration in honor of the big day. The Graham Chamber of Commerce will host the Celebrate Freedom day of events Saturday, June 28. The celebration begins with a pancake breakfast and ends with the Summer Concert Series and a fireworks show.

It was a banner year for The Graham Leader in the Texas Press Association’s Texas Better Newspaper Contest, coming home with nine awards including the top prize – the Division 4 Sweepstakes award. The awards were announced Saturday, June 21 during the Texas Better Newspaper Contest Awards Banquet at the TPA Convention and Trade Show in Denton. Entries were judged by members of the Kansas Press Association.

After making a trip for the Food Truck Championship of Texas, the Mobile Vet Center of Abilene will make another stop in Graham this weekend for the Celebrate Freedom event. The Mobile Vet Center provides space for confidential counseling of veterans, service members and their families at no cost in a non-medical setting. The Texas Department of State Health Services is hosting a free immunization clinic in Graham next week for those heading back to school or needing up-to-date shots. The clinic will be held by appointment Tuesday, July 1 at First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. The clinic will have immunizations for children entering kindergarten, seventh grade or college in the fall. Parents or guardians over the age of 19 must accompany a minor under the age of 18 to the clinic.
