    Kinds of Kindness is among a raft of female-led or co-led films scheduled for release in the coming months. It is notable because a recent study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that of last year's top 100 films less than a third featured a female lead or co-lead, the worst representation for women since 2014. The result was a drop from a record high of 44 per cent in 2022.

    With today's release of new film Kinds of Kindness, it will be the second movie this year from Oscar nominated filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos featuring Emma Stone in a leading role. Back in March she won the Best Actress Award for her role in his last movie Poor Things. And while the Greek director is a champion of female-led films, there's concern that the number of women topping the bill in big movies has fallen to its lowest level since 2014.

    As the latest instalment of the Mad Max franchise hits cinemas, veterans of the film industry say it's a prime example of why Australia is such a great spot to make big budget movies. Director George Miller says that's a big change from the first Mad Max film in 1979, when American audiences were so confused by Australian accents, the film had to be dubbed with American voices.
