Over the Rapids: Everyone should take at least one cruise

It’s been a while since I have written a column. Fortunately, we are able to have a bigger paper for the weekend now, so here goes!What to talk about? Hmmmm. The Herald has been busy lately; between the paper, Lake the Magazine, and graduation, we have all been jumping. We just put July’s magazine to bed, but we are already working on August’s edition. Which brings me to the section where you, our readers, can participate.
The Frontmen at Weldon Mills

The Frontmen put on a great show Friday night at the Weldon Mills Theatre. The group consists of Larry Stewart, Richie McDonald and Tim Rushlow, who respectively are former members of country groups Restless Heart, Lonestar and Little Texas. They sang hit songs by each group, with each doing backup. On the schedule next is The Marshall Tucker Band on May 31. I can’t believe that almost three months have passed since the cast of “Once Upon a Mattress” began this journey of getting a show ready for an audience. The first official rehearsal for some of the cast members began on Jan. 1. We missed some rehearsals because of the weather, and I missed several — dental issues, a sinus infection, strep throat, and even COVID for the second time this year kept me home. The latter I had the first time in the first week of 2025. What a way to start the year, right?

How ’bout that weather that blew through the Roanoke Valley on Wednesday!At The Herald, I sit in a room with no windows, so I can’t see what’s going on outside as far as the weather goes unless I get up and go look. I follow this wonderful and informative page on Facebook called North Carolina’s Weather Authority. If you follow our page on Facebook, you will see I share lots of weather events from this page.

I know there are many that don’t feel the same way I do — fall/winter being my favorite seasons, then spring, then summer. Those summer-loving people will just have to deal with it for a little while longer. I mean, it’s just beautiful to me. It’s Thursday, and I just stepped outside at work to check things out. Roanoke Avenue is a frozen sheet of ice, so that’s not good, and of course I worry about people driving, wrecking, getting hurt, etc. But on the other hand, it’s so nice and peaceful.

I miss theater. I don’t get to participate nearly as much as I used to. So, when auditions for a much-beloved show were announced, I thought, why not try again? “Once Upon a Mattress” is a musical centered around the story of “The Princess and the Pea.” I have performed in so many shows over the years that I can’t remember the year I first did this show at the former Lakeland Theater Company in Littleton.

Was last week just the New Year’s holiday? I had to look at my calendar twice to believe it, since it feels like a month ago. That probably had a lot to do with the fact it was just a horrible week to bring in the new year in my house. When Henry came home from fishing in the middle of the afternoon on Dec. 28, I knew when he said he wasn’t feeling well he meant it. Leave the lake before dark?

It has been a busy month at The Herald, and it’s not stopping anytime soon. We just finished our Discover magazine, which will be inserted in the Nov. 2 edition of The Herald. This is definitely one of our most popular magazines. This publication is out for a year and lists things to do, places to go, places to eat and is just packed full of information. Each year, the area Chambers call to get more copies because it’s like a guide for visitors to the Roanoke Valley and Lake Gaston.

September was a month of firsts, starting with a birthday beach trip to Nags Head. It’s been a long time since we were able to go for almost a week, so we were excited we didn’t have to rush to do things we wanted to do. Not only was it the first long trip in a car for our boy Jaeger, it was his first time seeing the beach. As you can tell from the photos, he loved it. Since there wasn’t anyone on the beach, we let him off the leash to chase a frisbee, a passion of his.
