Editor's evaluation These important research findings provide new insights into the biology of aging and support an important role for iron accumulation in post-menopausal women as a major reason why estrogen therapy is not as effective in preventing atherosclerosis as it is in the pre-menopausal state. The evidence supporting the conclusions is compelling using both animals models and human tissues. This work will be of broad interest to researchers and clinicians.
