Both things are true. Nobody will live under a tighter microscope in New York sports than Juan Soto. Leaving the New York Yankees for the New York Mets made it a large enough story. Tack on 765 million more reasons with his record-breaking contract and it’s no surprise why he’s going to be an everyday talking point among sports fans. It only took 18 games before Mets “fans” began to turn.

You don’t get points for creativity with MLB contracts, but the San Diego Padres shouldn’t care much about that anyway. They’re winning games and doing it after an offseason that seemed to have them interested in shedding payroll. They made a few lighter additions to the ball club, one of which involved signing a player whose name somewhat unexpectedly appeared in offseason New York Mets rumors.

We expected so much more from these guys. Juan Soto stepped in one in Wednesday’s finale against the Minnesota Twins. A game that could even have his biggest defenders thinking twice about crawling up the hill they plan to die on, the word “disappointing” isn’t too outrageous to describe his first 18 games with the New York Mets.

A broken leg will knock him out of action for several months, pushing Tyrone Taylor into an everyday role. Like, literally every day. The team decided to forego adding anyone to their roster on Tuesday, playing a man down instead. Taylor took his proper place in center field as we awaited the next roster move.
