Michael Whatley’s face didn’t make it onto the poster promoting 2022’s “Salt & Light” conference at a megachurch in Charlotte. That space was reserved for the smiling likenesses of such conservative Christian superstars as U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, Fox News host Trey Gowdy, and North Carolina’s own Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson. But Whatley, then chairman of the state Republican Party, had already caught the eye of an even bigger name.

In late 2018 and early 2019, Mark Harris was an almost-congressman from North Carolina. Harris had walked away from pastoring his Charlotte megachurch to pursue a dream of serving in the U.S. House. He knocked off an incumbent in the GOP primary, and then appeared to beat his Democratic opponent, Dan McCready, by 905 votes out of more than 275,000 cast.

Their destination: Rock Spring Campground, 26 miles up the road from Charlotte in the Lincoln County community of Denver. It’s the oldest continuing camp meeting in North Carolina and, some say, in the country.
