MITCHELL — Kaden Hessler and Jackson Jenkins were both part of the offensive and defensive lines at Mitchell High School, but the tandem's days of being teammates is not over yet. GERING — The Gering basketball teams had a successful return to the court Saturday afternoon in the program's first games in two weeks. Makenzie Todd scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Bulldogs girls to a 70-36 over Lexington, and Gage Ruzicka had 17 points as Gering downed the Minutemen 76-30 in the boys matchup. The Bulldog girls (5-2) led from the start and had as much as a 39-point cushion in the fourth quarter to extend their winning streak to four games.

Some of the names in the lineup have changed, but the level of winning has continued for the Bridgeport girls basketball team. The Bulldogs graduated four players from last year’s 27-1 team which finished third in Class C-1– which included all-state selection Olivia Loomis-Goltl – but haven’t missed a beat through roughly the first month of the high school season. Bridgeport edged Ogallala 61-58 on Tuesday to win the George Watson Classic title in Chadron and improve to 8-0 overall.

Zaili Benish had competed in the state girls basketball tournament and track meet over the previous few school years, winning a championship in the 300 meter hurdles in the latter sport as a sophomore. This fall she returned to the spotlight again as a member of the Warriors volleyball team which reached the state tournament for the first time since 2013 and advanced to the Class D-2 state title game.

When Gabby Moreno stepped to the plate this season, it was well more often than not that she ended up somewhere on the base path. It was a different story when opponents hit the ball to her, however. Gering's slick-fielding third baseman, who rewrote the majority of the Bulldogs' program record book during her high school softball career, put together a senior season which resulted in her being a Class B first team all-state selection.
