There has been a spate of books recently about private education, ranging from academic denouncements of their malign effects on society, such as Francis Green and David Kynaston’s Engines of Privilege, to Charles Spencer’s grim chronicle of neglect and abuse, A Very Private School. Though technically falling within this genre, 1967, the singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock’s diverting account of his formative spell at Winchester College, seems to hail from a rosier era.

Even amid inner Democratic turmoil over his capability to stay in office, President Joe Biden refuses to step down. In terms of proving he is too diminished to run, Cockburn is not sure what more evidence the Democratic Party needs. Biden mumbled through his Complex news interview with Speedy Morman on Friday. I’m meant to maintain some air of objectivity at Trump’s selection of J.D. Vance for vice president, but I can’t be bothered. It’s just excellent. By appointing him, Trump guarantees that the Republican Party will never go back to being neocon warmongers run by Wall Street. To channel Kamala Harris, I believe Vance shows us what the Republican Party could be, unburdened by what it has been.
