When the final out was recorded by Bridge City to end Salado’s run through the Class 4A baseball postseason in the Region III finals, so too was the end of the 2024-25 athletic season for area teams. Fittingly enough, it was a Salado team turning off the last switch. The Eagles once again enjoyed a well-rounded academic calendar year from the fall through the spring.

For a coach who retired five years ago, Kirby Johnson has been racking up accolades in much the same way his Temple College teams played — fast and furious. As if being honored as a Distinguished Alumni by the Temple Education Foundation last fall, followed closely by having the basketball court at Temple College named in his honor and later being inducted into the NJCAA Region 5 Hall of Fame wasn’t enough, he did all of those better.

Everyone who has spent any time in Bell County or is a connoisseur of high school sports is aware of Temple’s athletic tradition, particularly football. From now and beyond the foreseeable future, the Wildcats will look the part. There are still some adornments yet to be affixed and displays still to come, but the new 40,394 square-foot athletic fieldhouse is now a fully functional facility to house hundreds of athletes in multiple sports.

High school football season is still four months away. Yet, this is the time of year when new rules and innovations are being set into place. Two noticeable moves which came to light last month have some local coaches either yawning or happily anticipating them depending on who you ask. On the welcoming side of the equation is the prospect of the 2-minute timeout adopted last year by the NCAA as answer to the NFL’s time-honored 2-minute warning.
