From the earliest days of the West Coast landscape architecture firm TERREMOTO, a strange cloud hung over it. It was a cloud not of terror or hopelessness but of profound uncertainty. In 2013, roughly six months into the life of the firm, founding partners David Godshall and Alain Peauroi were meeting at a cafe in the Bay Area when Peauroi had a seizure. Godshall called 911 and followed the ambulance to the hospital.

Dawn Meadows in Junction City is fostering an actual meadow. Butterflies flit from yarrow to yellow St. John’s wort. Delicate wildflowers intermingle with wild sumac. In the summer, the vacant lot is a riot of color and sound, filled with birdsong and the insistent hum of insects. As idyllic as it is, this impromptu prairie and many areas like it represent one of the biggest challenges Junction City has faced over the past two decades.
