With all the dark chaos being unfolded by the techbro supremo and his squad of young know-it-all software engineers at DOGE, some items understandably get lost to us in the overwhelming daily deluge of cruelty and incompetence. That was the case for a speech the world’s richest man gave at  a tech conference 13 days ago. Although Tim Balk at The New York Times gave it some pushback in a prominent space, it was pretty much forgotten the next day.

Our world is a dynamic place. We live on a planet where giant continents move around and speeding asteroids clobber us from time to time, all but pushing the reset button. The climate has been so cold, the Earth was once a “snowball,” and so warm that palm trees and dinosaurs once lived in Antarctica. Halfway through the planet’s life, single-celled creatures utterly altered the atmosphere and the entire ecosystem by adding oxygen. But that took hundreds of millions of years.

No way can all the tears triggered by the ongoing evisceration of federal programs, agencies, and departments be counted. The potential toll — including the childhood death toll — just from smashing USAID programs abroad and Medicaid at home could be immense. And there is, of course, so much more, a daily litany of items the DOGE gang is taking their machete to. If you don’t know someone who is or fears becoming a victim of this onslaught, you’re living a sheltered life.

As many analysts and amateur observers — including me — suggested earlier this week, the impacts of federal firings and higher private sector layoffs last month did not hit the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released today. It reported a gain of 151,000 new jobs in February and a slight rise in the unemployment rate to 4.1%, remaining in the narrow range it has been for months. The job count is down slightly from the monthly average of 168,000 new jobs in 2024.
