Australia's pistachio harvest this year has been the highest on record and, with production set to triple over the next eight years, the industry hopes to tap into new markets overseas. Most of the nation's pistachio crop is grown along the Murray River in southern New South Wales, north-western Victoria, and South Australia. Many of the nuts are then processed at hulling facilities, including a new multi-million-dollar processing plant at Robinvale,in Victoria's north-west.

The Victorian government has given the green light to environmental plans fortwo mineral sands mines in western Victoria, despite opposition from farmers. Victoria's Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny revealed today she had approved the Environment Effects Statement (EES) for the Goschen Rare Earth and Mineral Sands Project near Swan Hill and the WIM Resource Avonbank Mineral Sands Project near Horsham with some operational guidelines.

New research released by Farmers for Climate Action shows strong support for renewable projects on farmland among regional communities. A nationwide survey found 70 per cent of residents living in areas affected by renewable projects were supportive of them, based on findings from 1,000 people. Supporters and opponents of renewable energy projects say genuine consultation is needed for the industry to succeed.
