    The Portland City Council voted unanimously Monday night to extend the ban on new hotel development in the city to give policy makers more time to review a controversial zoning restriction tied to the housing shortage. The current 180-day moratorium was set to expire June 2, before policy makers would have had time to craft potential amendments to the zoning ordinance that was designed to make hoteliers pay for new affordable housing.

    Freeport Town Council has approved tax increment financing to support a 42-unit affordable housing facility off U.S. Route 1. Varney Heights Senior Apartments will be built on a 9.2 acre lot at 22 Varney Road. It will be a joint project between the Freeport Housing Authority and Augusta-based developer Timothy Gooch. The housing authority is leveraging town TIF funding with MaineHousing grants and loans and low income housing tax credits to fund the $16 million project budget.

    An 118-unit condominium development at 171 Brook St. near Pride’s Corner in Westbrook is under construction by South Portland-based Optimum Construction Inc. Developer Brooks Edge Farm LLC is growing the 48-acre neighborhood in five phases. Phase one went under construction in the spring of 2024, Fifty of the cottage-style units have already been sold and 30 have been built. Scarborough-based Walker Team Real Estate is the listing broker, handling pre-sales.
