After several years of hosting pop-up galleries in Portland, Maine Art Collective has secured a three-year lease on a 1,676-square-foot space at 7-9 Moulton St. in the Old Port. The new space will open to customers this Friday. The short-term gallery space the collective has been operating for three years at 157 Middle St. will stay open possibly through December, unless the landlord leases the space,” gallery founder Sue Vittner told Mainebiz.

A long-delayed mixed-use project in the heart of Yarmouth village has gotten underway with the laying of the foundation for the 19,545-square-foot, three-story building. The project is being led by Windham, N.H.-based Beylin Development and its construction team. The project was first approved in 2021. Simon Beylin told Mainebiz that his company purchased the project in 2024 from Barrett Made, a design-build firm based in Portland.

The popular Higgins Beach Market at 82 Spurwink Rd. in Scarborough has been razed and replaced with a market that now offers an expanded kitchen, broadened menu and front porch. Big Tree Hospitality, which owns several restaurants in Portland, operates the market. Company communications director Amy Caramante told Mainebiz that the replaced market will be no larger than the previous store but will be bringing pizza back to the menu, and will be also be offering breakfast and lunch options.

PHOTO / COURTESY AVESTA HOUSING Jennifer Hawkins Jennifer Hawkins, a Rhode Island expert in housing and community development, has been named president and CEO of Avesta Housing, a Portland-based provider of affordable housing. The appointment comes six months after Rebecca Hatfield left the organization to join Hancock Lumber, with Eric Boucher stepping in as interim president and CEO. Hawkins will start her role in July 14.
