World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3, is a moment to reaffirm the fundamental principles of press freedom, to reflect on the state of media freedom around the globe, to defend the media from threats to its independence, and to honour the memory of journalists who have paid the ultimate price in pursuit of truth. This year’s World Press Freedom Day was commemorated last Saturday. Here in Botswana, this year’s commemoration is particularly significant.

The former president Dr Mokweetsi Masisi has earned himself the distinction of being the first President of Botswana to serve one term in office, since the amendment of the country’s constitution introducing term limits in 1997. Masisi, who was in power for 2, 034 days, was sworn in as the fifth president of Botswana on April Fool’s Day 2018. Riding on an anti-Khama wave, he won the elections in 2019 with a landslide.
