It is the beginning of a new year in Brussels – no it’s not January, but September. This is the time of the year here where things start to begin and a new sense of energy returns to the streets. This September is unlike the previous few years, as not only do Eurocrats return to work after a summer break, but also this year Brussels will be graced by the presence of the new cohort of members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and new commissioners.

The European elections are right around the corner (taking place from 6 to 9 of June) but for those of us who are Brussels based, this is just one of the many elections taking place. On 9 June, Belgium will also be going to the polls to elect new regional and federal representatives, which means shop fronts and billboards are progressively being filled with election posters.

An open letter calling on Europe’s political leaders not to ‘give up on the momentum of the Green Deal’ has been released by a coalition of 17 impact business networks across Europe. The letter from Business for a Better Tomorrow is set to be published in a range of national news outlets across Europe this week, including France’s L’Echo and Le Soir, Italy’s Ecomedia and Spain’s El Pais.

The power and responsibility of lawyers as “coders” of social and environmental justice was in the spotlight this week at a major international legal summit in London, UK. The annual summit hosted by GAIL (the Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers), held at the London School of Economics & Political Science on 23 April, brought together hundreds of lawyers from around the world, to explore how they could use their legal expertise to create positive impact.
