Last fall, when initial data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed a surprising drop in drug overdose deaths, the universal response was relief. We were finally getting something right in addressing the opioid epidemic, which accounted for most of the decrease and has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. That progress has been hard-won and should be celebrated. Addiction specialists are hopeful we can push the still-too-high numbers of opioid deaths even lower in 2025.

Spirits giant Brown-Forman Corp. says it’s reducing its global workforce by about 12% and closing its barrel-making plant in Louisville. The cost-cutting moves come as American whiskey producers face challenges from changing consumer trends and tariff threats. Brown-Forman's actions are projected to reap $70 million to $80 million in annualized cost savings. The company says it plans to reinvest part those savings in its growth strategy.

LAKE CITY, Colo. — A 74-year-old Lake City man was attacked and injured by a black bear inside his home Thursday night, Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced Sunday. The bear and her three cubs were euthanized after the incident. CPW said in a news release that the bear and her cubs entered the Hinsdale County home through a partially cracked sliding glass door, causing a loud crash that startled the residents.
