The NBA playoffs begin Saturday with the Celtics, Cavaliers and Thunders among the favorites. Would a team of former Georgia high school players contend? In previous years, no. Today, maybe. In the future, almost certainly if trends continue. There have been five Georgia players taken in the top five of the NBA draft since 2020. A Georgia NBA team would have two All-Stars — Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards of Holy Spirit Prep and Celtics forward Jaylen Brown of Wheeler.

Trinity Christian and Mount Paran Christian hired football coaches this week, bringing to 70 the number of offseason hires with 10 jobs still open. Trinity Christian, a Class 3A school in Sharpsburg, hired Starr’s Mill defensive coordinator Jeff Schmidlkofer on Tuesday. Schmidlkofer has been on Starr’s Mill’s staff since 2014 through six region titles and two state semifinals finishes. Schmidlkofer replaces Kenny Dallas, who took the Hebron Christian job.

The Georgia High School Association is doubling fines to $200 for missing online rules clinics after coaches paid $122,000 for 1,220 clinic no-shows last year. Going a step further, the GHSA no longer will let coaches work until they complete their clinics. In the past, they could pay their fines and still join their teams.

The Georgia High School Association will be announcing the playoffs brackets for five spring sports in 10 days, and it needs the scores of all games and matches played this season to do that. Sounds easy. It’s not. Don Corr, the GHSA’s scorekeeper, said he was missing 1,500 scores in those five sports and one other when he sent out his most recent request to athletic directors March 30 seeking to find missing scores or reconcile others.

The Georgia High School Association set precedent in 2023 when it introduced video review to help officiate the football championship games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now, the GHSA is poised to use video review again with three other sports — competition cheer, game-day cheer and dance — perhaps signaling a willingness to expand the tool. The proposal on the agenda for Monday’s executive committee meeting calls for video review for deduction calls at cheer and dance state competitions.
