Scientists have warned the risk of a new Covid wave has increased after the government confirmed a new dominant variant has taken hold. Known as the LP family, the LP.8.1 and LP.8.1.1 variants saw their combined share of new Covid infections in England almost triple to 60 per cent in just two weeks, meaning they now account for the majority of cases, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. In December, the LP variants accounted for less than 1 per cent of cases.

Sharp falls in the cost of solar panels over the past decade and rapid increases in the efficiency with which they can convert sunlight to power solar mean it is now the cheapest way to produce electricity in the UK. At the same time, Labour’s drive to take on the nimbys and push through huge infrastructure projects, has made it much easier to get them built, experts say.

People who are predisposed to nostalgia are likely to be happier than less sentimental sorts, a study suggests. Researchers looked at 1,467 people in Europe and the US over seven years and found that those who feel nostalgic more often and value those memories are likely to have more close friends than those who aren’t. This means these friendships may be more likely to last, even as we get older and our lives, interests and responsibilities change.
