A Gloucester minor was seriously injured in a crash on U.S. Route 17 at Saluda on Tuesday afternoon, May 6, reported Sgt. J. Teagle of the Virginia State Police’s Gloucester office. According to the police report, Virginia State Trooper M.S. Ward was dispatched to the single vehicle crash. Through his investigation, Trooper Ward determined the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic was traveling northbound on Route 17 when it ran off the right shoulder at Gloucester Road near Hardee’s restaurant.

There is no tax increase in the proposed fiscal year (FY) 2025-2026 Urbanna Town Council budget. However, if approved, thein-town water rates will increase about 10% and out-of-town water rates will go up 5%. The in-town rate will increase to $54.71 for the minimum 6,000 gallons in two months. Water used over the 6,000 gallons in two months will be charged at $5.08 per thousand gallons. Out-of-town bi-monthly water rate of the minimum usage 6,000 gallons bill will increase to $87.23, a 5% increase.

The Independence Day weekend in Urbanna could be special this year!A 200-drone light show could decorate the night sky over Urbanna on Saturday, July 5, if details can be worked out. On April 24, the Urbanna Town Council voted to contract for a drone light show by Airloom Drone Shows, located in Crozet, which is west of Charlottesville. The contract is contingent on securing a launch and recovery site.

The recent repaving of Urbanna streets has left manholes a few inches below the paving surface. Town resident Billy Mayo brought the sunken manholes to the attention of the Urbanna Town Council at its April 24 meeting. Mayo said that he saw two children riding three-wheeled scooters hit a sunken manhole and fall. “We can go to the moon but we can’t patch a hole,” said Mayo, who has regularly attended council meetings for years.

Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) Director of Small Communities Sam McAdoo addressed the Urbanna Town Council last week about concerns regarding sewage overflow occurring last month in the Bonner and Linden streets area. Rain on March 17 caused water to flow from a sewer manhole, a town citizen reported to the town council last month.
