If the Labour Party is good at one thing, it is tolerating weak and ineffective leaders. As an MP and former transport minister during the final days of New Labour, I couldn’t believe that Gordon Brown had been allowed to remain in charge so long. Like many of my colleagues in the party, I knew that if Brown led us into the 2010 election, it would spell the end of everything we’d spent more than a decade working towards. And, sure enough, it did – with David Cameron marching in to No 10.

This was a historic loss for Labour. The 17 per cent swing to Reform was the most high profile and dramatic result of last night but today will bring a clearer picture of how voters behaved in this first test of Labour’s popularity following last year’s general election. Reform’s supplanting of the embattled Conservatives as the main challenger to Labour is a crucial factor in all of this. But we should not let it detract from just how dreadful these results are for Labour and its leadership.

Would it be implausible for him to retain dreams of achieving the country’s highest office despite his first attempt having been shot down in flames by the voting public a decade ago? In the event of a vacancy at the top of the Labour Party and the Government, would Ed have the personal discipline and self-awareness to step aside and allow others to step up?

Ordinary Scots are getting sick of being told how to behave and what to think by their political leaders. By me for the @Telegraph https://t.co/P59hmoP8Aq https://t.co/qiLx8kY46S

The Scottish establishment is right to panic about Reform’s strength. By me for the @Telegraph https://t.co/P59hmoP8Aq

Worth reading. But only EIGHT Labour MPs out of more than 300 back benchers spoke up for women.

Thread of supportive @UKLabour MP speeches after Ministerial statement by @bphillipsonMP on @ForWomenScot's successful appeal. The Secretary of State was robust in support of @UKSupremeCourt's ruling about women's single-sex spaces in the Equality Act 1/ https://t.co/ETC0cFoNsq
