Colonial Forge’s Kate Loescher won the Class 6 state girls cross country championships held at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg with a time of 18 minutes, 7 seconds, 13 second ahead of runner-up Caroline Tribett from Gainesville. After finished second at last year’s state meet by 13 seconds, Loescher had a goal of winning an individual state title coming into her senior season and was one of the favorites heading into the championships.

Courtland got off to a bit of a slow start to open Saturday’s Class 4 state quarterfinal volleyball match against visiting Smithfield, but the Cougars righted themselves quickly with the help of strong play from the service line en route to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-8 victory. Every time the Cougars (27-2) seemed to be teetering towards a misstep, somebody was able to reset the hosts from the service line.
