The Free Lance-Star
The Free Lance–Star is the main daily newspaper serving Fredericksburg, Virginia, and its surrounding areas. Its distribution covers the city of Fredericksburg and parts of several counties, including Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, Culpeper, Fauquier, Louisa, Orange, Prince William, and Westmoreland. The newspaper began on January 27, 1885, when Col. John W. Woltz and William E. Bradley launched it as a twice-weekly paper to meet the local community's news and advertising needs. In its first year, a subscription cost $1.50. In 1900, the Free Lance merged with its rival, The Fredericksburg Daily Star. The two newspapers operated independently until 1926, when they were united under the guidance of Josiah P. Rowe Jr. to create The Free Lance–Star, which is published six days a week.

For Shya Simmons, every day feels like a vacation — at least when she is at work. “My days are filled with such joy and camaraderie and there is such an added richness to the tasks at hand when I am here,” said Simmons, lead concierge at Jubilation by Silver Companies, the 207-luxury-apartment home, 55-plus resort-style active adult community in Fredericksburg. For Simmons, the “tasks at hand” translate to much more than greeting each member with a smile and a kind word.

We all know we’re supposed to eat healthy, get fresh air and exercise, and floss daily to keep our bodies strong and capable of handling life’s daily challenges. What we might not think about is our mental health, and how our minds need care and nourishment as much as our physical selves. The stress of work, parenting, finances, anxiety about our future, past traumas … all of these can pile up in our minds and challenge our ability to live life to the fullest.

The Stafford Board of Supervisors last month advertised a potential 5-cent increase in its real estate tax rate, then held a last-minute work session on Tuesday to try to avoid it. In the end, which came in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Stafford officials approved a 3-cent increase. For fiscal year 2026, which starts July 1, the real estate tax rate will rise to $0.9236 per $100 of assessed value, compared to the current rate of $0.8936 per $100 of value.
