A seven-month Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation has resulted in the arrest of former Santa Rosa County School District administrator Kelly Short, who is accused of stealing just under $3,500 from a fund she was given access to as treasurer of the Santa Rosa County Association of School Administration. In her heyday in the 1950s, the superliner SS United States broke all records by crossing the Atlantic Ocean in three and a half days. Looking rusty and every bit of 75 years old, the former luxury cruiser limped into the Port of Mobile Monday with the help of a couple of tug boats. In what is being hailed as a first of its kind endeavor, 50 endangered reticulated flatwood salamanders have been released onto privately owned timberland property in Santa Rosa County north of Pace. The 3,719-acre property where the reintroduction took place is owned by a Danish group known as ATP and managed by Resource Management Service LLC, "one of the world’s largest and most experienced providers of timberland investment services," a press release from the company said.

Santa Rosa County Commissioners decided Thursday to expand a 10-person task force dedicated to Land Development Code reform to 12 members, and in doing so received some criticism for recommending the addition of two more people with ties to the building industry. Ten of the full slate of 12 have now been nominated, though county officials say no appointments will be final until the board votes to breathe life into the task force at its Feb. 27 meeting.

The Santa Rosa County Commission will look at taking $1.5 million previously set aside to pay for a PD&E study at the Navarre Beach Causeway Bridge and putting it toward installing tolling devices at the span to collect funds to be to put toward maintenance and eventual construction of a new bridge. Commissioner Ray Eddington has been pressing fellow board members to start looking seriously at replacing the aging bridge.

The Milton City Council voted Tuesday to drop a lawsuit its members had filed last year against Mayor Heather Lindsay and has begun the process of ending its association with City Attorney Alex Andrade and the legal firm for which he works. The board voted 5-3 to end the lawsuit that has been ongoing since last May. Larry McKee – one of four council members elected in November in an upheaval that saw city voters send four incumbents packing – joined Gavin Hawthorne and Casey Powell in opposition.

On July 4, 1927, the day it was dedicated for use as the Santa Rosa County Courthouse, the core of the hulking yellow brick structure that today overlooks U.S. Highway 90 at the entrance to downtown Milton was dubbed by a local newspaper as "the most modern in the state."Back then, by all accounts, it was something to behold.
