If Donald Trump could crown himself emperor, as Napoleon did, it’s pretty clear by now that he would do it. In his own words, “He who saves his country does not violate any law.”But Napoleon had something that Trump lacks. He was wildly popular at the time, and placed the crown on his own head only after the people of France voted with near unanimity to give him that power. Trump is no Napoleon.

We’re likely to learn soon whether President Trump will explicitly defy the Supreme Court, a move that would unleash the dogs and turn our democracy on its head. The case that could provoke that involves a Maryland man with no criminal record who was deported to a horrific prison in El Salvador based on what a Justice Department lawyer admitted was a mistake. I’ll get to that. But the case underscores a core feature of our politics today that no lawyer can fix.

The demonstrations across the country last Saturday did nothing to stay President Donald Trump’s hand. He was golfing at the time and ignored it altogether. But I hope Canadians were watching. And Greenlanders. And Mexicans. And all our old friends across the globe, who must be wondering just what the hell has happened to us. The demonstrations showed that many Americans are asking the same question. We don’t see them as parasites. We don’t want to hurt them. And we don’t want to break up.

President Donald Trump told NBC news last weekend that he’s dead serious about serving a third term as president, no matter what that dusty old Constitution says. He knows he can’t hope to pave the way by amending the Constitution, as one of his bootlickers in the House has proposed. That takes a vote by two-thirds of the Congress, and ratification by at least 38 states. There is nothing on God’s earth that could build that kind of consensus in today’s America, not even apple pie.

Fox News host Sean Hannity worked to earn every penny of his $25 million salary this week, telling his listeners that the hubbub over the stunning leaks by President Trump’s senior national security team was all “breathless hysteria” fluffed up by soulless Democrats. “The outrage from the left over a reporter being accidentally added, a one-time minor accident . .. is just political show,” Hannity told his 2.4 million viewers.
