Another Warm and Wet Month!

Northern Michigan has been dealing with warm weather for a very long time now. This past month was no surprise!The month was full of ups and downs. The month started active with strong storms and even 1 storm strong enough to produce a tornado. On June 5th, a weak tornado was reported in Roscommon County at the Forest Dunes Golf Club. Officially, an EF-0 tornado with winds of up to 80 mph caused damage at the golf club.
Small Tornado Hits Crawford County

ExpandThere’s no doubt it was an active day across the region. There were a few thunderstorms but most were not severe. This initial report was of numerous trees down at the Forest Dunes Golf Club. Winds were showing some rotation around that time. The atmosphere was far from ideal to develop a tornado but evidence shows it was enough. The National Weather Service (NWS) from the Gaylord Office went to investigate shortly after the report came in.
Northern Lights Visible Tonight (May 10, 2024)

The Northern Lights is already going strong this evening but it’s still daylight. The 1st of 7 coronal mass ejections have reached Earth resulting in strong and severe geomagnetic storms. A coronal mass ejection is an expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the sun’s corona The mass ejections disrupt the Earth’s magnetic field and the charged particles from the sun react with the Earth’s atmosphere. The result is the Northern Lights.
Northern Lights Very Possible Starting Friday Night

Potential is High NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Friday night, May 10. This is the 1st G4 Watch since January 2003! Since Wednesday the sun has produced several solar flares. The flares all came from a focused area on the sun. Space weather forecasters say at least 5 flares associated with Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) appear to be directed toward Earth.
Tornadoes Cause Destruction in Southern Michigan Tuesday Evening

A strengthening storm system caused destruction across parts of Southern Michigan Tuesday evening. It’s the same system that started near Iowa the day before causing damage from Iowa down to Oklahoma. The main line of storms developed after 4 pm moving into far SW Lower Michigan. They intensified and became tornadic quickly. The first tornado warning was issued at 5:14 pm for Van Buren County. The concern was a possible tornado and large hail.

ExpandApril 2024 came and went and to no surprise, it was another warm one. March had record heat across the board, and while April wasn’t that hot, several locations had the top 10 warmest April’s on record. The month started around average to above average temps but with bursts of wet weather a some snow! That’s right, there were some slushy accumulations in the first few days of the month. Fire danger became an issue as things dried out.

It’s that time of year, the hummingbirds are returning to Northern Michigan!They typically arrive either in late April or early May and we are there now!The recent spike in Spring weather has made a difference. Temperatures have risen into the 60s and 70s at times and we’ve had plenty of rainfall. You can see some plants are really popping and the grass is greening up.
Tornado Drill Wednesday at 1 pm

ExpandOn Wednesday, March 20th at 1 pm, a voluntary statewide tornado drill is scheduled. The drill comes in the middle of Severe Weather Awareness Week. The drill gives residents an opportunity to make a tornado plan and put it to the test, he said. The average lead time for tornadoes to develop is 10 to 15 minutes, requiring quick action to get to safety. Businesses, organizations, families, and individuals are encouraged to participate.
2024 DNR Wildfire Tactics Meeting

ExpandOn Tuesday, the DNR held it’s annual Tactics Meeting for wildfires in the Northern Lower Peninsula. This is held every year to make sure the all the departments are on the same page for the upcoming wildfire season. Updates to fire mapping, fire zones, the Spring outlook, communications, air operations, UAS operations, equipment, and morew were all discussed in detail. Our own Chief Meteorologist Tom O’Hare presented this year’s Spring Outlook to the group.
Record Setting Warmth Across Northern Michigan

Tuesday was just an incredible day all across Northern Michigan. It was a day to get outside and soak up the sunshine. Record high temperatures were set for all our main climate reporting stations. All the daily record highs were broken as well as the All-Time record highs for the month of February!Traverse City and Alpena both reached at least 70 degrees! Something you just don’t see in February. Most areas didn’t just break their records by a degree or two but shattered them.
